Whero o Te Rangi Bailey, Kuia
As war continues to rip through the centre of families, communities, and futures in Ukraine, Bailey’s portrait becomes a gentle call to remember: peace begins with protection. With care. With courage.
By purchasing this artwork, you take your place in that peace, standing not only for art and action, but also for future generations.
Chosen for the Legacy Collection for her wisdom and mana, master weaver and respected kuia Whero O Te Rangi Bailey stands before a worn harakeke. This was the intention for her portrait, even though lush bushes grew nearby. This one, she said, ‘represented life’s truth’.
Harakeke is a living embodiment of whānau (family). To tend the harakeke is to understand the meaning of life itself. Care for the next generation and in return, providing all that is needed to survive, fibre for weaving, tools for hunting, shelter, clothing and medicine.
At the heart lies the rito, the tender inner shoot, symbolising the child. It is never touched. Beside it the awhi rito, nurturing parent leaves, the guardians who protect the young.
These too, not harvested. Only the outer leaves are taken, always with care. When this balance is honoured, the harakeke flourishes, just as a community does when it safeguards its own future.
Each artwork sold directly funds Stuart's humanitarian journey, culminating in a powerful exhibition and publication dedicated to aiding displaced women and children affected by the war.
Your contribution will be forever honoured, your name included on the role of honour in exhibitions, films, and the forthcoming book.
