This artwork symbolises peace and freedom, while celebrating one of the most graceful animals on the planet. This work will be still be in existence 10,000 years’ time. Giving permanence, honouring the Hawk’s life, offering immortality in reverence.

The Hawk is a spirit animal. It is a celestial being that flies to the beat of its own rhythm and flow. It is the very expression of freedom, it follows its own persuasion. This spirit animal brings wisdom, courage, creativity, illumination and truth to your life. It encourages clear-sightedness and guardianship.

When Robertson photographs people for Peace in 10,000 Hands, he asks them ‘what does peace mean to you’. Many people around the world of all religions and persuasions, say ‘Peace means Freedom’.The significance of the Hawk’s life is honoured by applying one of the world's most precious and delicate metals to the wing, that elevates the Hawk providing power, freedom, and grace. Gifting eternal preservation through casting the gold-leafed feathers on the wing in an airtight resin vitrine. The Hawk’s DNA was permanently sealed, protected for eternity like a butterfly from the Jurassic period encased in amber.

The wing floats in the cast resin block maintaining the appearance of flight. The work rests on a piece of hand-cut South Island Schist, to acknowledge the place where the Hawk is found, providing a solid foundation and home.

The appearance of the wing shifts and alters; sometimes it is translucent and glows, sometimes solid and detailed, others bright and reflective. The gold leaf and feathers react to the environment they rest in, turning that very place into a home, and offering guardianship.

‘There are many things in life that will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart… follow those’.
